Planning Permission in a nutshell

A simple view of how Planning Permission works

Sitting at the top of the legal structure is the Town & Country Planning Act 1990. It defines most
‘works’ as development and makes planning permission necessary to do it.

The Act provides two separate routes to planning permission:

-permitted development under the General Permitted Development Order 1995 as amended by SI 2008 No 2362 or

-by application to a local planning authority (Council)
