Permitted Development...How it works
How it works
Each of the 17 Classes of householder Permitted Development is headed with a
main paragraph stating broadly what is ‘permitted’. Sub-paragraphs then
narrow this down by setting out specific limits to what the main paragraph permits.
This ‘permit generally then limit specifically’ approach is at the heart of how
PD works and affords maximum freedom for your personal choice of design.

In the Class D example above, paragraph “D.” is the planning permission for
any design of porch provided it is at least 2 metres from a highway, no more
than 3 metres high and not over 3 square metres in area.
The other Classes in the GPDO work in the same way. Each Class starts with a paragraph
that permits generally and is followed with sub-paragraphs which limit specifically.
