IVIS 2009......3D Guides at the Royal Institution in London!

The International Vacuum Insulation Symposium 2009 took place at the Royal Institution in Mayfair, London on the 17th & 18th September 2009 and it was a great honour to be asked to make a presentation in the Faraday Lecture Theatre to an assembly of such eminent scientists and architects. Over 140 delegates and presenters from across the globe attended, including Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, China, Canada, Holland and the USA.

Vacuum insulation I hear you ask? Well, yes. Not many people have heard of it, but it's been in use for some years in the manufacture of refridgerators and the logistics industry because it provides very low levels of thermal conductivity for a given thickness. e.g. a 2 inch thick vacuum insulation panel (VIP) is roughly equivalent to about 18 inches of fibreglass!

One of the problems with VIP's, though, is that they are relatively expensive and last 'only' maybe 20 -25 years. That might be OK for a fridge but not for a building where the industry needs reliability..............Read more....

IVIS 2009......Part 2

Whilst our presentation was entitled "Making the most of permitted development rights with vacuum insulation" we also introduced the theme "Bigger is Better" in relation to up-grading large sections of the existing housing stock with 'whole house makeovers'. The presentation included a Preview of our forthcoming 3D Guides series on how to turn your house into an 'eco-home' (where 'eco' is principally short for 'economic').

Our proposition is that the first and most important measure householders can and should take is to improve the thermal efficiency of the building envelope. Our 3D Guides demonstrate how this can be done......Read more
